Of all the various types of forums that I read and post to, this one seems to have the friendliest people.
Many forums have a lot of attention seeking. And petty bickering breaks out over the simplest things.
That rarely, if ever, seems to happen here.
It's interesting...

"Sometimes in our life
We all have pain
we all have sorrow;
But - if we are wise
We know that there's
Always tomorrow -
LEAN ON ME. . ."

That's exactly what came to my mind reading this thread.
I hope that I've been at least as much help to people here
as the help that I've received. The PORG's presence in my
life is one of the ways in which I believe myself to be
truly blessed.

Coda - we're all glad you're not a serial killer. wink.gif

Been around for a bit and then some. Started back in the day when hacks and phreaks were, by necessity, the same thing. So just shy of 30 years wired.

I have never been into online communities that were social networking based. No judgment on those that like such; just not something I have ever been willing to invest time in.

I have however, made quite a bit of use of topic based Usenet/BBS/Forums over the years. I have been a mod/admin a time or three over the years as well, even at places where I didn't much care for the culture. If it was a place that I used a bunch as a resource I would help keep it alive.

Perhaps 1/2 a dozen times I would find a place that I had high hopes for. A place that seemed to have the potential to grow into something like this and was based on a topic that could be useful to me. I would keep tabs but they would eventually die or fade away. Either getting the axe for questionable content or simply not having enough citizens to survive as a culture.

I have been aware of this place for a bit over 5 years and instantly realized that it was a rare gem. Even if I have never been an active member I have always been aware that this was a rare place where I could fit in. I have found plenty of topic based social sites that had both longevity and a viable population. But I am just so picky and snooty; none of them clicked with me.

Polite to each other, no spamming/flaming, warped sense of ha-ha, decent command of the English language, willing to go that extra bit to help out members in need, very much smarter than the average bear(s), sharing intimate problems, no nastiness or judgmentalism. I am sure that you have all given thought to what makes this place special and unique.

In all my time on the inter-web I have only found 4 places ohmy.gif
Places that had a culture similar to here, had longevity, and discussed things that would justify me sticking around at all.

Wow, not sure how I missed out on that but I had no idea all that went on. Just another MAJOR testament to the caring and goodwill of all the folks that frequent this board.
